The Enoch Seminar took shape in the year 2000 at the initiative of a group of international scholars, who answered Gabriele Boccaccini’s call for a meeting of American, European and Israeli specialists on Second Temple Judaism and Christian Origins. The founding group included James Charlesworth, John Collins, George Nickelsburg, Pierluigi Piovanelli, David Suter, and Benjamin Wright, from America; Andreas Bedenbender, Florentino Garcia Martinez, Klaus Koch, Michael Knibb, Helge Kvanvig, Paolo Sacchi, and Loren Stuckenbruck, from Europe; Hanan Eshel, Esthi Eshel, and Ithamar Gruenwald, from Israel.
The First Enoch Seminar was held in Sesto Fiorentino, Florence, Italy (19-23 June 2001) at the University of Michigan Villa Corsi-Salviati. It focused on the Early Enoch literature in pre-Maccabean times.
